USB signaling for self-checkout

Visual signaling for self-service terminals

The PATLITE LR6-USB is a Ø60 mm signal tower powered and controlled directly over USB. It connects to the terminal's own PC or HMI, runs on Windows and Linux and allows custom programming — with no separate power supply for the tower.

You need a solution for…

Situations that repeat every day at the front of store and cost operator, supervisor and customer time.

The self-checkout that stopped and nobody saw

A self-service terminal halted by a scanning error or an age check stays halted until someone walks past. Meanwhile the customer waits alone.

The customer who queues at a closed terminal

With no clear indication of available, busy or out of service, the customer picks the wrong lane, has to change queues and leaves with the impression of a disorganised store.

The attendant who cannot see the whole area

With 8 or 20 terminals in the self-service area, knowing where a call came from means walking the aisle. The information exists in the system, but never leaves the screen.

Signaling that demands electrical work

Putting an indicator on each terminal usually runs into the power point available at the counter. Without power from the equipment itself, every station becomes a separate case.

From the self-checkout system to the signaling, all over USB

The LR6-USB is powered and controlled by a single USB connection. That allows the signaling to be integrated into the equipment's system without a separate power supply for the tower.

  1. 1 Self-checkout system The PC or HMI that already runs the terminal. It is the one that knows the state of the operation.
  2. 2 USB connection A single cable carries power and command. No external power supply and no new electrical point.
  3. 3 PATLITE LR6-USB The tower lights up according to the logic your application defines, in continuous or flashing light.

Why the LR6-USB for self-service

Every item below comes from the manufacturer's documentation, not from a commercial estimate.

A single interface

Power and control over the same USB connection, with 5 V DC coming from the bus itself. Extending to more terminals does not depend on an electrical project.

Windows and Linux

The official documentation covers both systems, which avoids changing the self-service platform because of the signaling.

Custom programming

PATLITE provides a software library and DLL, and states open architecture for the LR6-USB. The IT team integrates it into the terminal's system with no intermediate hardware.

Light and sound in the same body

Built-in buzzer with 4 sound patterns and an 80 dB alarm. The light can operate in continuous or flashing / strobe mode.

Built for continuous use

IP65 protection rating and NEMA Type 4X and Type 13 classification, as per the product documentation. Indoor use, vertical installation.

Unambiguous product code

Each configuration matches one Part Number. That removes the back-and-forth of emails to confirm exactly what will be quoted and delivered.

Mounted on top of the terminal, the tower is visible from anywhere in the front of store — including from several metres away.

About what the colours mean: the different colours can be used to represent equipment states according to the control logic defined by the application. The product documentation establishes which colours are available, not a mandatory meaning for each one.

Configurator

Build the configuration and get the Part Number

The code generated here goes straight into the quote form, with no typing.

1 Supply type

2 Number of tiers

3 tiers This is the pre-assembled catalogue configuration of the LR6-USB. For a different tier count, use the modular configuration.

3 Body colour

4 Tier colours

  1. Top Red R
  2. Middle Yellow / amber Y
  3. Bottom Green G

The red / yellow / green order is fixed on the pre-assembled product, counted from the top down.

Integrate the signaling into the equipment's system

The LR6-USB is compatible with PCs and HMIs running Windows or Linux. PATLITE also provides a DLL library for custom programming.

For the IT team

The tower appears as a USB device. Colour and buzzer commands go through the manufacturer's library, with no intermediate hardware between the terminal and the signaling.

For integrators and manufacturers

PATLITE states open architecture for the LR6-USB, which allows the signaling to be embedded in the self-service terminal's own software.

For whoever specifies the project

One cable per terminal, with no new electrical point. Extending to more positions follows the same recipe, with no revision of the front-of-store electrical project.

    Frequently asked questions

Can the LR6-USB be used on self-checkouts?

Yes. The official LR6-USB documentation lists self-checkout stations among the applications of this family, and the product is powered and controlled over USB from the terminal's own PC or HMI. Integration with your system depends on the software you run — our technical team can assess your case from the form on this page.

Does the LR6-USB need a separate power supply?

No. The documentation states a 5 V DC supply from the USB bus itself, with a maximum rated current of 500 mA.

Does it work with both Windows and Linux?

Yes, with both. The documentation presented by PATLITE states compatibility with Windows and Linux.

Can I control the tower through software?

Yes. The manufacturer states the possibility of custom programming using the DLL library provided, and indicates open architecture for the LR6-USB.

    What does each colour mean?

The colours have no fixed meaning defined by the product. The documentation establishes which colours are available — red, amber and green on the three-tier model — and it is up to your application's control logic to define what each one represents.

Does the Part Number determine the product configuration?

Yes. On the LR6-USB the code identifies the family, the number of tiers, the body colour and the colour of each module, in top-to-bottom order. That is why the form does not ask for those characteristics again: they are already in the code.

Does every colour combination have a ready-made code?

No. The product is modular and accepts up to 5 modules, but not every combination exists as a pre-assembled catalogue tower. When the desired configuration does not match a pre-assembled code, supply is made up of a base unit plus individual modules, each with its own code. The configurator on this page works exactly that way.

    Which model should I use?

If you already know the Part Number, use the models table and click request quote. If you do not, describe the application in the message field — number of terminals, POS system and whether you prefer an off-white or black body — and the Shinwa technical team will reply with a recommendation.
